The most common postural distortion is the forward head posture.
Posture plays an important role in a person's overall health. It affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production.(1) Due to tension on the spinal cord and its coverings and associated blood vessels, abnormal spinal curvatures can also lead to degenerative neurological conditions over time.(2)
Yes, it is true! Because of the nervous systems influence on the body, spinal misalignments and malfunctions can lead to or aggravate many common conditions. Many of these complaints are generally not associated with the spine.
The forward head/body posture (slumping) has been found to be directly related to current or potential spinal dyfunction, pain and general ill health. Individuals with a greater foward shift of the posture tended to rate their health poorer on standardized health questionaires than those with a lesser forward posture shift.(3)
One of the areas that a person can actively, positively and profoundly impact their overall health is on spinal health and posture. Researchers are continually studying and confirming the far reaching effects of abnormal spinal function on the areas of immune response, aging, hormonal production and even genetics.
