Homeopathy is a 200-year-old form of natural medicine using microdoses of a substance to stimulate the body's own healing powers. It is based on the principle of treating like with like. In practice, this means that a substance that causes symptoms of illness in a well person can also cure similar symptoms when they result from illness. There are over 2,000 homeopathic remedies that are usually referred to by their abbreviated name. Extracts of the natural ingredient are dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and water and left to stand, usually for 2 to 4 weeks. During this time they are shaken and strained. The strained solution is known as the mother tincture. This mother tincture is then used to make different homeopathic potencies. They are usually prepared in X, C, and M potencies. The greater the dilution, the more powerful the effect.. just the opposite of what one might think. X potencies are dilutions of 1 to 10; C potencies 1 to 100; and M potencies 1 to 1000. In making an X potency, one part of the mother tincture is diluted with 9 parts of water and/or alcohol and shaken vigorously with impact, creating a 1 X potency (1 X=1 / 10). One part ofthis solution is then diluted with 9 parts of water and/or alcohol and shaken vigorously with impact, creating a 2X potency (2X=1/100). The process is repeated until the desired concentration is achieved. There is a limit to the dilutions that can be made without losing the original substance altogether. This is referred to as Avogadro's number. In homeopathy, this limit is at a 24X (or 12C) potency. It is believed that the vigorous shaking with impact of the remedies (called succussion) leaves behind an energy or pattern of the original substance and it is this energy that stimulates the body, revives the vital force of an individual, and brings balance to his/her system. The majority of the homeopathic remedies we stock are overthecounter liquid remedies, preserved in ethanol. They are prepared to the highest quality standards from pure substances. They are safe and may be used on all ages. Frequency of the dose and the potency used varies with each patient and severity of his or her condition; however, our combination products have a suggested dosage on the label.
